A. Compare and contrast the different versions of John Henry. Why do you think that the stories are different? Answers should include text from the John Henry tale.

C. Discuss the theme of John Henry as man versus machine and its place in 19th century lore. Relate John Henry's experience to our current 21st Century lives using technology. Does technology kill us as humans, like the steam-powered machine killed John Henry?
D. Discuss how Jimi Hendrix and his myth are similar to John Henry. Is there another modern myth that better represents Henry? If so compare and contrast that figure to John Henry.

90-100 – Students will have five fully formed paragraphs that keep with the 5 paragraph essay form on their topic and include 3 examples from sources. Essays will be of at least 2000 words in length. Students will have a thesis that is clear and focused. Topic sentences in each paragraph will relate to the main idea. Supporting details will relate to the topic sentences. Sources will be cited. Transitions will be effective. Students will have some type of insight or conclusion gained from their essay.
80-89 – Students will include 3 examples from their topic OR students will have a 5 paragraph essay with an introduction and conclusion. Essays will be of at least 2000 words in length.
